This year’s Mercury Prize ceremony will take place in Newcastle upon Tyne, the first time the music event has been held outside London since it was launched in 1992.
The 2025 edition will be held at the city’s 11,000 capacity Utilita Arena. The event will take place on 16 October and will be broadcast by the BBC.
A shortlist of 12 albums are nominated for the annual music prize, with the winner selected by a judging panel of industry experts.
Last year’s winners were Leeds band English Teacher for their album ‘This Could Be Texas’.
Leader of Newcastle City Council Karen Kilgour welcomed the decision to bring the event to the city.
She said: “The fact that Newcastle has been chosen as the first location for the prestigious Mercury Prize to ever be held outside of London speaks volumes of the growing strength of the music industry in the city and wider city region.
“The Mercury Prize needed no further evidence that Newcastle was the place to hold this prestigious industry event.”
