The Manhattan-based structure known as “the Vessel” is set to be reopened to the public Monday after being closed since 2021, the Associated Press is reporting.
Standing 16 stories and 150-feet over Hudson Yards on the city’s West Side, the sculpture was closed after several people took their own lives by jumping from it, the report said.
According to the outlet, the structure will reopen to ticketholders with floor-to-ceiling mesh barriers installed in parts, while the top level will remain closed, Related Companies, which owns Hudson Yards said Sunday.
“Not a day goes by that we don’t have visitors walking up to our staff asking where they can buy tickets and when it will reopen,” Related CEO Jeff T. Blau said in a prepared statement. “That interest hasn’t diminished during the time we’ve been closed, and we’re excited to welcome guests from all around the world back to Vessel with additional safety measures in place.”
The climbable honeycomb-like sculpture which features zigzagging stairs and was a huge tourist draw when it opened in March of 2019, was designed by Thomas Heatherwick and fabricated in Venice, the report said.
