Coronation Park on Richmond Road is set to showcase a sculptural commission alongside a series of entrance markers and orientation features.
These installations are part of a broader town centre regeneration strategy by North Yorkshire Council, intending to revitalise and rejuvenate public spaces.
Artist Katayoun Dowlatshahi will create entrance markers made of corten steel totems with ceramic collars.
Meanwhile, the ‘Core Crossing’ sculpture, designed by Sapien Studio’s Steve Anwar, will stand as a striking focal point in the new town square.
The 4m-high structure will feature a keyhole-shaped passage with an inscribed poem reflecting local stories.
The artworks’ design not only emphasises aesthetic appeal but also seeks to integrate community and local stories into the public space and has been designed through comprehensive community engagement involving over 500 participants.
The installations are being funded by the UK Government, North Yorkshire Council, and the Ministry of Defence, aiming to provide a significant boost to the visual and community aspects of the town centre.
Notably, the designs and materials for these commissions aim to require minimal maintenance, contributing to their long-term sustainability.
The installation process will adhere to detailed risk assessment methods and safe operating procedures, ensuring community safety during and after placement.
Planning consent was granted by North Yorkshire Council on March 3.
