There is a misconception among some that central London is the only place to soak up culture and try new food; in reality we have plenty on our doorstep in Havering.
I set aside an afternoon to see what I could do within walking distance of Hornchurch town centre.
Giggling Squid’s gorgeous outdoor terrace (Image: Charlotte Anderson) With the sun beating down on the high street, I knew I had to find a place for lunch where I could sit outside.
Giggling Squid was the perfect option: a Thai restaurant with a pretty outdoor terrace set back from the busy high street, featuring lots of greenery and flowers.
This calm oasis has only been in Hornchurch for three years, but has already gained a reputation for its extensive cocktail list and friendly atmosphere.

After tucking into some small plates, I chatted with manager Chanel Slater, who has been in charge since the Hornchurch branch opened, about new menu items and future plans for the venue.
From here I ventured over to Fairkytes Arts Centre – a hub for all things music, dance, drama and art.
Fairkytes Arts Centre is a hidden gem in the town centre (Image: Charlotte Anderson) There are often classes and workshops for all ages, and while I was there a “joy of sewing” class session was well underway.

Even more of a hidden gem around the back of the main centre is Fry’s Gallery, which displays artworks from local artists, schools and community organisations.

What is brilliant about this gallery is that many of the works are for sale and those interested in buying a piece can simply put their name down on the sheet at the exhibition’s entrance.

Picturesque Langtons Gardens (Image: Charlotte Anderson) Here is a chance to pick up a unique, handmade gift; I bought myself some new earrings as a birthday present to myself.

To finish off the afternoon I walked over to Langtons Gardens – literally round the corner from the centre – to soak up the last bits of sun.
Overlooked by a Grade II-listed Georgian manor house, the gardens are steeped in history and feature a Victorian greenhouse, ornamental bridge and a tea room.
The gardens were glorious in the sunshine – and you would be forgiven for thinking you had escaped the busy centre of Hornchurch.
