(ABC 6 News) – Some artists paint with brushes, others use spray cans, but Bob McGill chose razor blades as his utensil.
McGill’s unique approach to art was just one of about 60 others, all taking their talents to the Austin ArtWorks Festival over the weekend. The festival is known to attract not only locals from the area, but around the country as well.
McGill made the 15-hour drive from Tennessee because of how the continuous support of staff year after year and the appreciation people in Austin show for the arts.
“I would not drive 15 hours to do an art show if they weren’t as friendly as they are here, so they are very good to the people here at this show,” McGill said.
All weekend, people got a taste of all kinds of art forms, from theatrical performances, music and activities to keep little ones creating. Interim executive director for Austin Area Arts, Kelsey Ritchie, said it’s all put on in an effort to connect the whole community through art.
“Austin is lucky where we really have a community that supports the arts, we just kind of want to give back to that, for not just our community but the surrounding areas,” Ritchie said.
The care and attention to supporting creators in and around the area worked to set a standard for the art community in Austin. Jacques Elate Joss and his wife Carmen Elate attended the festival for the first time last year and said they were pleasantly surprised.
“We came last year and it was a wonderful surprise for us to see how artists are supported here, they have a great Friday dinner for us,” Elate Joss said.
The festival completed its 14th year on Sunday and each year, Ritchie said the festival grows a little more. But, at the end of the day, getting people to show up was never the goal.
“Everybody can get inspired, be happy and spend time together,” Ritchie said.
While anticipation grows for next year, Ritchie said people can get excited for the grand reopening of the Paramount Theatre on Sept. 14.
