A stately art museum displaying one man’s private collection

Banker Ricardo Espirito Santo bought and restored the Azurara Palace in 1947, and upon his death, his collection of antiques, art and home furnishings were donated to the museum. Here you’ll find an amazing amount of fine art objects, including a first-rate collection of azulejos (ceramic tiles), Chinese and Portuguese porcelain, Flemish and Spanish paintings, ornate wooden furniture and exquisite silverware.
The 17th-century palace in itself is worth a visit, and some people feel it’s even better than the collection inside. The lavish interior offers a glimpse into the trappings of the former Portuguese aristocracy. Chandeliers, tapestries and tiled mosaics adorn the walls and the ceiling, and of course there’s still the wide-ranging collection of decorative arts scattered about. Fans of architecture, history and stylish knickknacks amassed by the rich and powerful will truly have a wonderful time inside the Museum of Decorative Arts.
