BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – Community leaders and art enthusiasts gathered Tuesday morning for the unveiling of a new bronze sculpture outside SKyPAC that serves as the beginning phase of a much larger public art initiative set to spread across Bowling Green.
Funded by a donation from local businessman Joe Davis, Dancing in the Spirit is a large bronze depiction of a figure dancing while suspended in the air. The piece was first commissioned roughly 18 months ago and now sits on the plaza outside SKyPAC, welcoming visitors to the performing arts center.
“When you visit SKyPAC and come to a show, we expect Dancing with the Spirit to remind us of the importance of the arts in our community. We expect Dancing in the Spirit to remind us it is our responsibility to keep community spirit alive. To remind us that our strength is in our strong values led by a spirit within us,” Davis said.
Created by Bowling Green artist Russ Faxon, the bronze figure is only the first sculpture in what will eventually be a sculpture walk leading from SKyPAC and Circus Square Park to the trail of art installations on Western Kentucky University’s campus.
Former Warren County judge-executive Mike Buchanon explained that many downtown crosswalk signals will also be updated with public art, as well as several sculptures throughout the city and county at public parks.
There is no timeline yet for when those art installations will be put out.
