The butterflies, which were integral to the Wild Uplands installation at Penistone Hill Country Park, suffered damage believed to have taken place shortly before the incident was reported.
The art trail, intended to run from May 24 to October, featured a total of 60 hand-crafted butterflies carved from pink marble sourced from Pakistan.
These pieces were the work of Pakistani-born artist Meherunnisa Asad and Peshawar-based atelier Studio Lél, which is known for reviving historic stonework techniques.
At the time, Shanaz Gulzar, creative director of Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, said: “It is sad and disappointing that these beautiful stone butterflies, a symbol of resilience and renewal, hand-crafted to draw people to our historic landscape, have been destroyed by thoughtless individuals.”
Following the incident, West Yorkshire Police were alerted and called for witnesses to come forward. Security measures were also heightened at the site to prevent further vandalism.
