Three murals in south London that will take your breath away.
Seriously. How can anyone be this talented? Most of us couldn’t paint anything this accomplished on a regular piece of paper, let alone the side of a house.
This exceptional work of art is in a quiet suburban street in Lewisham. It was painted by Spanish artist Wedo Goás, who specialises in large-scale portraiture.
This particular example, at 39 Lee Church Street, honours the Windrush Generation and is inspired by the Caribbean communities in the local area, mixed with British heritage. The green upholstery is inspired by the chairs in the House of Commons.

The two-storey portrait was created as part of the London Mural Festival 2024, which beautified the city with dozens of artworks, all arranged with the buy-in of local communities.
Another stunner to come from that stable can be found on Cobbett Street, midway between Oval and Stockwell. Just look at this:

A Lasting Place, as it’s known, is by another Spanish artist, Sebas Velasco. Sebas spent some time getting to know the local area, taking photographs and meeting local residents, before he decided on his subject: a young man called Yves from nearby Brixton.

The mural features him standing in front of Brixton’s train line at night, and takes its name from local south London rapper Loyle Carner’s song of the same name. You can find it on Broadstone House.
And then there’s The Pigeon Feeder. Also created for London Mural Festival, this three-storey marvel appears to pop out of the wall.

Artist Liam Bononi created this masterpiece at 125 South Lambeth Road, a short walk away from Sebas Velasco’s work. It is inspired by a local man Liam met in the park. The reactions from the local community have been overwhelmingly positive:
London Mural Festival is organised every four years by our friends at Global Street Art. Sadly, we have to wait another three for the next one, but the festival and its artists have created an impressive legacy around town for us to enjoy in the meantime.
