A new art installation coming to Domain Northside next week will give Austinites the rare chance to see Mars — or at least a hyperrealistic version of it — up close.
The north Austin shopping and entertainment district will host “My Mars,” a 22-foot illuminated sculpture depicting the surface of Mars in striking detail. The installation will be on view at The Lawn from Oct. 29 through Nov. 2.
“I hope that visitors will feel transported to its inhospitable, desert wasteland and, in comparison, really value our life on Earth,” Jerram said in a statement.
He used NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter imagery for this piece, and each centimeter of the sculpture represents six miles of Mars’ surface.
A launch event for the installation will take place at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, on The Lawn beside the Apple store. The event will feature a musical performance and lecture from Jason Achilles, the space expert who helped design the microphone that captured the first-ever recorded sounds from Mars’ surface.
Alison Goodman, senior marketing director for Domain Northside, said the installation continues the center’s effort to bring educational and visually engaging art experiences to Austin.
“It’s a chance for families, students and anyone curious about the cosmos to get an up-close experience of Mars that is both visually stunning and intellectually enriching,” she said.
“My Mars” is free to view and open to the public throughout its five-day run.
